About Cantiones Renovatae
"Old songs refurbished, broken consorts mended, interrupted cadences completed, no job too small etc" Well, it's not quite like that but we appreciate the thought!
Cantiones Renovatae are an early music group who were formed in 2003 for the commemoration of the death of Queen Elizabeth I. We present concerts, workshops, background music, and music for any event where Tudor music would be appropriate. Our second project, Paston Present, used the music of the Paston Lute Books as a starting point. Subsequent programmes have been Sleep Wayward Thoughts, a snapshot of the court of Queen Elizabeth, and The Power of Music Behind the Throne, an introduction to the music of Philip van Wilder, Henry VIII's court musician, and Tregian's Underground, an examination of music written by Catholic musicians in Elizabeth's reign, taking as our starting point the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VII and extending the theme to music written by other composers who had been marginalised or limited by their religious beliefs.
Our most recent programme, Music for the Royal Courts East and West, combined our music with that of the gamelan, based around Francis Drake's visit to south East Asia. |
